Senegal has extensive reserves of exceptionally high quality phosphate. Marketable phosphate from the Taiba Mine, which has been mined since 1960 in NdomorDiop and more recently in KeurMor Fall and Tobene, is synonymous with excellence around the world. The mine site is located about 100 km from Dakar.
Marketable phosphate is consumed as is by the phosphoric acid plants in Darau, or can be dried and sent to the Dakar port, for export.
After they are mined, some of the quarries are filled in and turned over to local farmers, who find the soil rich and fertile, and suitable for market gardening and intensive farming.
